Mid-May at the Market: Ice Cream, Greenhouse Peppers and Spring Planting

We hope you had a great long weekend! Our team spent the week getting the market ready and keeping the shelves stocked with your favourites, especially Shaw’s Ice Cream. With so many flavours to choose from, sometimes nothing beats classic vanilla topped with local strawberries, Iron Kettle Granola and a drizzle of local honey. Shaw’s is made with Canadian dairy and is some of the creamiest ice cream around, so we always make sure the freezer is full this time of year.

Usually by now we’re in tank tops, sitting poolside and chasing away sunburns, but with this weather, we’ll keep patiently waiting on Mother Nature while enjoying our ice cream anyway.

Out in the fields, some of our strongest early-season crops are already hard at work. Beans, garlic, rhubarb and our first patch of corn are all underway, and our kale has officially outgrown its greenhouse pots and moved into the field, where it’s handling the cooler temperatures just fine.

We’re hoping to get more planting done this week as the ground continues to warm. Planting corn is always one of our biggest projects of the season, with multiple plantings spaced throughout the summer so we can keep it coming right into the fall.

Inside the greenhouse, our jalapeños, mini peppers and shepherd peppers are growing quickly. If you looked up, you’d see strings hanging above the pepper plants. They’re part of a vertical growing system that supports the plants as they get heavier, improves airflow and sunlight, and makes harvesting easier later in the season.

It’s one of those behind-the-scenes details that helps us grow healthy, high-quality produce for your table.

While there’s still a little chill in the air, it’s also a great time to get first pick of our hanging pots and flower baskets. We have a beautiful mix of colours in the greenhouse, and you can browse what’s available online or add flowers to your subscription box order for home delivery.

If you’re waiting to start your garden, we also have herbs and vegetable plants ready to take home. Herbs are especially easy to grow, even without a garden. A large pot, a few smaller pots, a shelf or a sunny windowsill can give you fresh flavour all season long.

We’re already halfway through May and more than one month into our 2026 subscription box deliveries, with plenty more growing, blooming and ripening ahead.
