The Farm Is Finally in Full Growing Mode
Now this is the weather we’ve been waiting for.
Warm afternoons, cool mornings and evenings with just enough of a breeze to remind you spring is still hanging around the edges. After a long stretch of cold snaps and a few frosty starts, the farm has finally shifted into full growing mode.
The fields are planted, full and responding quickly to the sunshine. At this time of year, things can change almost overnight. One day the rows look quiet, and the next you notice zucchini breaking through, peas beginning to climb and kale ready for an early harvest.
Kale is one of the first crops we bring in once the season starts to turn, and it’s often one of the last still standing when the cooler months return. It’s a steady crop for us, and always a good sign that the season is moving in the right direction.
When we harvest from our own fields, it’s picked the same day it makes its way into the market and into your subscription box. That means your produce is coming to you with very little time between soil and table. It may even arrive with a little dirt from time to time, which is part of buying from a working farm.
From the field, everything moves into our market and warehouse, where it’s sorted and packed while it’s still at its freshest. There’s not much time between harvest and home, and that’s something we’re proud of. When we say fresh, this is what we mean.
This week, Rambo and Fabion were out finishing a round of pepper planting. Rambo led the way on the tractor while Fabion followed behind, carefully planting each pepper by hand. It’s slow, steady work, but it gives each plant the best possible start.
In the market, fiddleheads have been moving quickly, along with vibrant local beets. The beets are especially beautiful right now, with deep purple roots and fresh leafy tops still attached.
Don’t toss those greens aside. Beet tops are excellent raw in salads, or cooked the same way you would use Swiss chard or spinach. They’re tender, earthy and a great way to use the whole vegetable.
We also shared some sweet news this week. Fresh Colasanti’s donuts and peach juice are now available in the market and in subscription boxes. The donuts are picked up daily, so they arrive fresh from the morning they were made.
Add them to your box this week and enjoy a little taste of the season.
