Roma Tomatoes, Daily Harvests and the First Signs of Fall
Another week, another box filled with fresh local produce. After months of planning, planting, weeding, and waiting, every crop in our fields is now being harvested.
You can feel the season starting to shift a little. The days are still warm, but the evenings are arriving earlier. By around 8:30 or 9 p.m., the sun is already starting to drop, which always seems to happen before we are quite ready for it.
Still, we are making the most of these summer days while they are here.
Everything is being harvested now
From a farmer’s point of view, the weather this past week has been close to ideal: sunshine, rain, and cooler breezes mixed in at the right times. The crops have responded well, and this is the part of the season where months of work start to show up in a very visible way.
Right now, we are harvesting sweet corn, red and yellow watermelon, cantaloupes, Roma tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, kale, jalapeños, shishito peppers, zucchini, green and yellow beans, garlic, new potatoes, herbs, and eggplants. It keeps us moving from sunrise to sunset.
You can browse what is freshest right now in our In Season collection, or shop more staples through our Fresh Produce collection.
Cherry tomatoes and sweet corn
People often ask which crops we like harvesting most. Cherry tomatoes are high on the list. When they are ready, you can gently place your hand under a ripe cluster and the tomatoes almost fall into your palm.
Sweet corn is another favourite. There is something satisfying about walking the rows during harvest and knowing that corn will be on someone’s table later that day.
Your box changes with the season
That is just what is growing in our own fields. Your subscription box also includes produce from trusted local farming partners, which helps us offer a wider mix of fruits and vegetables while supporting other growers in our community.
If you have been with us since spring, you have probably noticed how much the boxes have changed. That is one of the best parts of eating locally. Every week looks a little different because every week reflects what is ready, what is peaking, and what is just starting to come in.
Fall is starting to show itself
We are still in summer mode, but fall is starting to wave from the end of the row. More Golden Nugget corn is coming, along with early squash varieties like spaghetti, acorn, and butternut.
We planted those early because many of them need more than 100 days to mature before the first frost. They are growing well, and we are already looking forward to sharing them.
Even the mums are beginning to show their first colourful blooms. Not enough to rush summer, but enough to remind us what is coming.
Roma tomatoes are the highlight this week
One of the biggest highlights this week is our Roma tomatoes. For a lot of families, this is the start of sauce-making season: buckets of tomatoes, a full kitchen, and a day set aside for making something that will taste good all winter.
Whether you are planning sauce day or just want to enjoy Roma tomatoes while they are fresh, we have included a slow-roasted tomato confit recipe below. If you are looking for a large hamper of Romas, give the market a call.
