Sweet Corn, Local Peaches and the Best of Late July

It is hard to believe we are already nearing the end of July. Before long, the flavours of fall will start creeping in, but we are not ready to rush summer out the door just yet.

There are still plenty of sunny days, fresh harvests, and sweet seasonal favourites to enjoy.

Peaches & Cream now, Golden Nugget soon

Our Peaches & Cream sweet corn has been one of the big favourites over the past couple of weeks. We love seeing so many of you making it part of your family dinners, and in just a few days we will begin harvesting Golden Nugget, another variety we are excited to share.

To help keep up with demand, we planted an additional field at the very back of the farm, which should keep fresh corn on your table well into the fall.

We have been harvesting corn every day, sometimes several times a day, and it has been great meeting so many visitors who made the trip to the market just for fresh-picked cobs.

We also had some extra hands in the field recently. Last week, Rambo was teaching Sebastian a few of his best harvesting techniques. If you enjoyed our corn this past week, there is a good chance Sebastian helped pick it.

Roma tomatoes are getting close

Elsewhere in the fields, the Roma tomatoes are starting to ripen, which means sauce season is almost here. Let your grandmas, nonnas, and anyone else who waits all year for tomato day know it is getting close.

Every year, our family spends a day filling buckets with fresh Romas and turning them into jars of sauce for winter. It is a long day, but every jar is worth it.

The cherry tomato plants are busy too, bursting with bright red fruit and adding even more colour to the fields. Some of you may have added them to your subscription box this week, which is about as easy as summer snacking gets.

Peaches, plums and melons

The market is also full of some of the sweetest fruit of the season. Local peaches and yellow plums have arrived, and we think they might be even sweeter than last year.

We never take for granted the growers around us who make that possible. Being able to offer fruit grown close to home is one of the best parts of this time of year.

Our own cantaloupes are now coming in from the fields, and they are as sweet and refreshing as summer should be. Not long ago, our watermelons were tiny fruits tucked under the vines. Now they are growing quickly in the July heat, and harvest is only a few days away.

There is a lot of joy in watching that happen after months of watering, checking, waiting, and trusting the plants to do what they do.

A chilled melon in the fridge, a few slices packed for the beach, one cut up for a barbecue table. It does not need to be complicated. That is the nice thing about summer food when it is at its best. It mostly just needs to be shared.
